Do you know these Drug and Alcohol Test Answers?

How do you know if you have a drinking problem?

One alcoholic answered this question for herself when she realized it wasn’t about how much she was drinking, but about how much she thought about drinking.  She finally acknowledged that she couldn’t stop drinking without help.

How do you know if your drug use is getting out of control? If you’re wondering if you should find help, you can take a self-test first. There are several online sources for alcohol or drug evaluation self-assessments.  The primary benefit of using a self-assessment, is that it can be completed in the privacy of your own home, or somewhere you feel comfortable with the subject matter.  You can also receive immediate results and feedback.  However, if you determine that you do indeed have issues with drugs or alcohol, the appropriate next step would be to seek a professional evaluation by a qualified doctor, clinician, or trained addictions specialist.

Below are some general test questions to help you determine if you have a problem with substance abuse. Carefully, read each yes or no question, and try to answer honestly, taking into consideration your actions over the course of the past 12 months.

  • Do you feel you must consume drugs or alcohol to get through your day?

  • Has your performance at school, work, or home been affected by your drug and alcohol consumption?

  • Do you constantly think about the next time you will drink alcohol or take drugs?

  • Has your drinking or drug use interfered or caused problems with your personal relationships?

  • Have you suffered from memory loss after using drugs or alcohol?

  • Have you ever had to seek medical attention because of your drug and alcohol use?

  • Do you experience withdrawal symptoms after not consuming drugs or alcohol for an extended period of time?

  • Do you go to extensive lengths to obtain drugs or alcohol?

  • Do you remain intoxicated for several days at a time?

  • Do you say or do things while intoxicated that you later regret when you are sober?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it would be wise to consult a professional to get support and guidance.

Some self-assessment tests found online are lengthy and require submitting your contact information in order to get results. Some can actually evaluate for both drugs and alcohol within the same test, and some are written with questions relating to alcoholism or drug abuse specifically.

Drug and Alcohol Test Answers: The CAGE Test for Alcohol Addiction

The CAGE Test for Alcohol Addiction is short and simple, yet surprisingly accurate if answered honestly. It is a YES/NO set of 4 questions:

1. Have you ever thought you should Cut down on your drinking?

2. Have you ever felt Annoyed when people have commented on your drinking?

3. Have you ever felt Guilty or badly about your drinking?

4. Have you ever had an Eye opener first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover?

Scoring the CAGE test:

Record 1 point for each YES answer.

If you scored 1, there is an 8o% chance you’re addicted to alcohol.

If you scored 2, there is an 89% chance you’re addicted to alcohol.

If you scored 3, there is a 99% chance you’re addicted to alcohol.

If you scored 4, there is a 100% chance you’re addicted to alcohol.

There is the Modified CAGE Test for All Addictions:

1. Have you ever thought you should Cut down on your drug or alcohol use?

2. Have you ever felt Annoyed when people have commented on your use?

3. Have you ever felt Guilty or badly about your use?

4. Have you ever used drugs to Ease withdrawal symptoms, or to avoid feeling low after using?

The AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test) is for Alcohol Addiction and has 10 multiple choice questions and was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO).  It classifies 95% of people as either alcoholics or non-alcoholics.  The Audit is available through the WHO website – please follow this link. It asks more specifics about the type of drinking you do.  For example: how many times per week/month you drink; how often you have 6 or more drinks on one occasion, etc.

Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous also have an established set of YES/NO questions you can answer. Some examples of their questions are:

1. Have you ever decided to stop drinking for a week or so, but only lasted for a couple of days?

2. Do you envy people who can drink without getting into trouble?

3. Has your drinking caused trouble at home?

Any of these questions can be altered to replace drinking with drug use to provide a similar evaluation regarding problems with drug addiction.  The bottom-line is that there are multiple resources for conducting a self-evaluation if that is where you’d like to start. However, if you find yourself answering ‘yes’ to more questions than you answer’ no’, that is your clue that your drinking or drug use has become a problem, and you may chemically dependent, or you may be an addict. Seeking professional help is your next step.
